The All-Union Bibliophile Society turns out all sorts of publishing production indispensable for bookmen. It includes books on books, posters, calendars, bookmarkers and such-like. The Vice-Chairman of the Society Central Board describes this function of the Society.

A. KONDRATOVICH Tvardovsky as a book reader

The article by an eminent critic and book reviewer who worked as an associate editor of the "Novy Mir" magazine with A. T. Tvardovsky as the editor-in-chief, portrays the popular Soviet poet as the author knew him, outlines the part that books played in the poet's life.

Y. OSETROV The world of Mikhail Sabashnikov

Books published by the Sabashnikov brothers are very popular with book collectors and experts to this day. Yet we have only a vague idea of their lifeways and of all sorts of difficulties they were to get over in their publishing business. People's Actor of the USSR M. Zharov is known to have had a passion for books. He took special interest in collecting miniature editions. In his interview to the "Bibliophile Almanac"'s correspondent he describes his collection. This is one of his last interviews.

K. LYASKO Three meetings with I. Zilberstein

The article describes a search for new documents dealing with the history of Russian literature. The search was made by I. S. Zilberstein, a distinguished Soviet literary scholar and one of the initiators of the "Literary Heritage" series.

I. MULLER A novel in shorthand

F. M. Dostoyevsky's novel "The Gambler" is known to have been written astonishingly fast, in less than a month. The writer could reach such a speed because he was assisted by his secretary and his wife-to-be A. G. Dostoyevskaya who practised a progressive system of shorthand writing. The article deals with the inventor of the system I. M. Olikhov.

F. M. Dostoyevsky in Revel

There is a house in downtown Tallin where Dostoyevsky used to stay with his brother. The subject of the article is Dostoyevsky's visits to Revel (Tallin) and the prototypes of some characters in his fiction.

An essay on lives and works of Maharbeck and Batyrbeck Tuganov, prominent writers and artists.

M. GRINBERG Moscow printers

Specialists in the history of Russian culture and bibliography in particular have recently concerned themselves with the production of the Moscow Mint of the middle of the seventeenth century. The article covers some aspects of book printing at the time.

V. KALUGIN "The Cloister Chronicle" by Dmitry Rostovsky

Dmitry Rostovsky, a philosopher, historian and writer of the eighteenth century is a highly interesting personality. One of his major works which he called "The Cloister Chronicle" took up many years of his life. The author of the article who has done a research on Dmitry Rostovsky traces the history of the "Chronicle".

Y. MAKUNIN "Salon 100"

A group of artists known as the "Salon 100" played a most prominent part in the development of Art Nouveau in France. A review of the prints produced by the group is illustrated with colour reproductions of the posters turned out by the "Salon 100" artists.

An article on the rare edition of a treatise on logic published in the sixteenth century.

S. KORYSTIN A book that did not reach the reader

A bibliophile from Tula presents an unique book by Leo Tolstoy which was published only after his death with the original text cut down almost in half by the censorship.

B. BENDIK-VEROV A flaming word

The book entitled "Belorussia on Fire" issued in the years of the Great Patriotic War contained poems, songs and folklore by Belorussian partizans. The author of the article also cooperated in preparing that collection.
